Canadian Museum of History Indigenous Internship Program

September 6, 2022
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
Canadian Museum of History Indigenous Internship Program

DEADLINE:  September 23, 2022

Gatineau, Quebec, September 7, 2022 — The Canadian Museum of History Indigenous Internship Program has returned and is now accepting applications. This program, the first and most comprehensive of its kind in Canada, offers First Nations, Inuit and Métis from across Canada professional and technical training in museum practices. The deadline for applications for the 2022–2023 program is September 23, 2022.

Because of COVID-19, the format of the program has been adapted. Originally an eight-month in-person program, it is now a flexible hybrid experience that provides online mentoring coupled with three sessions of on-site work, each lasting one week. Eligible participants are invited to submit concise project proposals for an internship experience that includes both in-person and online work. All training is undertaken in collaboration with staff at the Canadian Museum of History and the Canadian War Museum in a variety of fields, including research, collections, exhibitions, public programs, public affairs, publishing, development, and museum services. The objective of this internship is to offer practical experience to Indigenous people who would like to broaden their skills in various aspects of museum work. Training is available in both official languages.

Since 1993, the Museums have welcomed interns from over 40 different Indigenous Nations and communities across Canada. Graduates have gone on to become role models and advocates in the museum and cultural sectors. Upon completing the program, many graduates have used their training and experience to become community museum staff, directors, instructors or government employees. Graduates of the program have also continued to further develop skills in specific areas of expertise.

Work of the Canadian Museum of History is made possible in part through financial support of the Government of Canada.
