Celebrate Métis culture and history: Minister Wilson

November 14, 2023

Minister of Indigenous Relations Rick Wilson issued the following statement to recognize Métis Week, Nov. 12-18:

NationTalk: “Métis Week is a time to celebrate and learn about the distinct history, culture, traditions and contributions of Métis people in Alberta. The proud legacy of the Métis is an important thread in our province’s history. Long before Alberta became a province, the Métis were among the original entrepreneurs and drivers of commerce dating back to the fur trade.

“Métis people share a deep and profound connection to the land all across Canada, which they have called home for generations. Uniquely, Alberta is the only province in Canada to have a Métis land base recognized under provincial legislation – the eight Metis Settlements covering a span of 1.25 million acres.

“Today, more than 127,000 Métis call Alberta home. Their contributions enrich the cultural, social and economic fabric of our province.

“During Métis Week, we also pay tribute to the great and visionary defender of Métis independence Louis Riel, who is remembered by many on the anniversary of his death on Nov. 16, 1885.

“I encourage all Albertans to explore the vibrant Métis culture. From beading workshops to jigging lessons and fiddle music, there is something for everyone to enjoy!”
