In advance of the June deadline, the CMA made a formal submission to the consultation process of the new National Museum Policy. We proposed a set of 12 recommendations, developed after comprehensive study and reflection, as well as through an exchange of views with the sector and allied organizations, aimed to address the sector’s existing challenges. The recommendations provide a roadmap for enhancing the role of museums in Canadian society, including an adjustment to the definition of museums, strengthening their financial sustainability, and reinforcing their commitment to support for Indigenous self-determination, diversity, and inclusion.

The CMA also supported the Reconciliation Council with their own submission, asking that a new Policy must first centre the truth of Canada’s colonial history and its impact on Indigenous cultural heritage, and use the findings of the Moved to Action report to support Indigenous self-determination and UNDRIP compliance.

Both submissions envision museums as dynamic institutions with a sustainable future, and properly supported by government policies.
