Indigenous Green Economy Initiative

February 22, 2024

NationTalk: The Indigenous Green Energy Participation Grant Program is an economic participation instrument that supports Indigenous communities, suppliers, and businesses to take part in the green economy and have impactful and transformational effects on the transition towards sustainable green economies. This inaugural grant program will launch at the National Indigenous Green Technology Conference in February 2024 and will make a total of $100,000.00 available for applicants to support their projects, ideas, and further immersion into the Green Economy.

Cando anticipates the grants would range from $500.00 to $25,000.00 each for Indigenous communities, entrepreneurs, or existing Indigenous suppliers to develop business cases to support their transition towards or further their training to successfully participate the Green or Net-Zero economy.

The grant program will incorporate a summary of key findings and recommendations developed as part of the feasibility study and will align with the Government of Canada’s Indigenous Services Canada granting program guidelines and requirements. In the following section, you’ll find an overview of the program, its process, and its governance.

The Indigenous Green Energy Participation Grant Program

Cando, in partnership with Indigenous Services Canada, is launching a grant program that is aimed at supporting Indigenous peoples in Canada to transition towards the green/ net zero future. The Indigenous Green Energy Participation Grant Program would provide grants between $500.00 to $25,000.00 for Indigenous entrepreneurs or existing Indigenous suppliers to develop business cases to support their transition or further their training to successfully participate the green or net-zero economy.

This inaugural Indigenous Green Energy Participation Grant Program will be launched in February 2024 and will close March 15, 2024 with the intention of providing a total of $100,000.00 for applicants in the summer of 2024.

Objectives

The objective of supplying grants through the Program is to support Indigenous communities, entrepreneurs or existing Indigenous suppliers to develop business cases to support their transition, continue to expland their network, or further their training to successfully participate in the green energy or net-zero economy. Through the development of green energy and net-zero initiatives, Indigenous people will have the opportunity to find viable energy opportunities, advocate for their futures and build successful and sustainable plans to support a sustainable green future for their communities.
