Call to Action # 1: Child Welfare (1-5)

CASW Response to CHRT ruling

January 26, 2016

CASW applauds the decision to acknowledge the federal government’s egregious discrimination of First Nations children by underfunding child welfare on reserves.  Today’s Human Rights Tribunal ruling in favour of the Assembly of First Nations and the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society is a major victory in the fight against inequity in Canada. Beyond addressing this ruling’s specific concerns by implementing new funding models and providing culturally appropriate services, CASW hopes that this decision will more broadly mark a new era in Canada. CASW urges the federal government to act immediately on all 94 Calls to Action advanced in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s (TRC) final report.
