PAGC Demands Inquiry into Custodial Death of Young Mother

January 10, 2024

NationTalk: (Pre-Confederation, Treaty 5, 6, 8 & 10) Prince Albert, Sask. – The Prince Albert Grand Council is demanding a swift and transparent investigation into the death of Tatiana Custer, 23, a mother of a five-year-old, who died in custody at the Pine Grove Correctional Centre on Jan. 3. The young mother is to be buried in Stanley Mission this Thursday.

In the wake of this tragedy, Grand Chief Hardlotte is expressing serious concerns regarding the lack of communication from the correctional services and other official bodies, including the Prince Albert Police Services’ Victim Services. It was brought to his attention that Ms. Custer’s family did not receive any information about her death or the status of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding it.

“The absence of clarity and open communication with Ms. Custer’s family following her tragic death is unacceptable,” said Grand Chief Hardlotte. “Her life ended abruptly at 23, and the absence of empathy and information extended to her family signifies a severe breakdown in our justice and support systems. They deserved timely and compassionate communication during such a heartbreaking time.”

PAGC is seeking a full and transparent investigation into Custer’s death.

“Only a prompt and thorough investigation, along with improved communication protocols, can prevent such failures in the future,” said Grand Chief Hardlotte.
